What is “Toltec”?

You could say that Toltec teachings are many different things on different levels.  On one hand, you could say that Toltec teachings are a loosely-connected set of teachings which were first popularized in the United States by Carlos Castenada.  Mr. Castenada’s books chronicled his experiences with don Juan, a Yaqui nagual (or shaman). 

One of the most recent authors of books about Toltec teachings is Miguel Ruiz, M.D.  Don Miguel has written four books, The Four Agreements, The Four Agreements Companion Book, The Mastery of Love, and The Voice of Knowledge, all published by Amber-Allen Publishing.  This website is dedicated to those who teach and practice in the lineage of don Miguel.

At its simplest, Toltec teaching describes a philosophy of living your life exemplified by don Miguel’s Four Agreements:

• Be impeccable with your word

• Don’t take anything personally.

• Don’t make assumptions.

• Always do your best.

These four agreements have a very common-sense appeal and have been applied and interpreted in many different settings.  If you wish to join (or start!) a community of people who support each other in the study the Four Agreements, we suggest you investigate Four Agreement Wisdom groups at www.sixthsunfoundation.org/groups.html.

On a much deeper level, don Miguel's Toltec teachings are presented in a mystery school known as "Toltec Dreaming."  As don Miguel says,

"If we take away the superstition and mythology from the traditions around the world, the result is pure common sense.  When it comes to common sense, there is no difference the Toltec tradition, the Egyptian tradition, the Christian tradition, the Buddhist tradition, the Islamic tradition or any other tradition, because all of these philosophies come from the same place.  They come directly from human integrity.  ...The masters witnessed the truth and created a story, depending on what they believed."*
